Through games and training, you can make sure your cat is getting enough mental stimulation and physical exercise, and also strengthen your relationship. Play can cure boredom and increase enrichment. Enrichment is important because a lack of enrichment can lead to eventual behavior problems. Games are a great way to prevent boredom in cats by channeling their instincts to hunt and play.

First, find your cat's motivation.

When introducing training and games, first figure out what your cat finds the most motivating. For most cats, this is an edible treat. Experiment with different treats and toys to find out what your cat likes the best. Once you find out what food is most motivating, your cat will be very engaged to learn new skills and spend more time with you.

Building your relationship.

Games and training help your cat associate you with fun and joy. Playing with your cat can help cats feel more secure, reduce stress and anxiety, and helps you understand your cat better. You get to know your cat's personality and unique traits, and preferences.

Some of the best games for cats are games that channel your cat's instincts, which are games that let them explore, chase, and hunt.

There are a variety of games that you can choose to play with your cat, but there are some games that certain cats enjoy more. Consider games with the following elements and qualities:

  • Chasing/Running

  • Wand toys

  • Scents

  • Boxes

  • Paper bags

  • Puzzle games

  • Hunting and Stalking

  • Batting/Swatting toys

  • Jumping

Make sure that playtime is safe and fun for both you and you cat.

Let your cat choose the pace. Take it slow. Be patient with your cat. If your cat is uninterested, try again later.

Watch for signs of irritation, aggression, or fear. When you notice these, stop and leave your cat alone. Try again later.

Trick training is one of the best ways to bond with your cat. It can encourage your cat to engage with you and also provide them with mental and physical stimulation. Tricks should always be taught using positive reinforcement training methods.
