Tortoise Treat Ideas! (Easy, Healthy, and Delicious)

Red-footed tortoises thrive on a varied diet that mimics their natural omnivorous habits in the wild.

But I also love to spoil my tortoise Marley with treats!

Treats should be used sparingly and complement their staple diet of greens, vegetables, and a small amount of fruit.

Treats should never exceed 10% of the total diet.

There are some benefits of offering treats. Treats can provide enrichment by preventing boredom and providing a variety of tastes and textures that can be mentally stimulation.

Best Healthy Treats:

  • Fruits

    • Papaya, Mango, Strawberries, Bananas, Melon, Blueberries.

Fruits are healthy treats because they are high in vitamins (especially Vitamin C) and antioxidants.

  • Edible Flowers

    • Hibiscus, Nasturtium, Rose Petals, Dandelions, Marigold.

Flowers are healthy treats because they are high in fiber and low in sugar

  • Protein Treats

    • Earthworms or a small amount of cooked lean meat, like chicken, and cooked egg whites

Protein is healthy because protein is necessary for growth

  • Cactus Pads (Opuntia):

Healthy because high in calcium and fiber, and a good hydration source.

Avoid These Treats: toxic or unhealthy treats:

  • Avocado

  • Rhubarb

  • Tomatoes

  • Iceberg Lettuce

  • Spinach

  • Onion, Garlic, or Chives:

  • Citrus Fruits (Oranges, Lemons, Grapefruits):

  • Peas and Beans:

  • Processed or Salty Foods (Bread, Crackers, Chips):

  • Dog or Cat Food:

  • Milk, Cheese, or Dairy Products:
